Jebel Banat

 


Standing on the northern perimeter of the high mountain massif, the peak of Jebel Banat offers superb views of the whole high mountains region on one side and the lowlands on the other. Right below it is Sid al Nogra, a seasonal waterfall. Jebel Banat can be reached on foot either starting from the settlements of Abu Seila (via Wadi Freah and Wadi Saray), Sheikh Awad (via Wadi Gharba and Wadi Nogra) or Abu Zeituna (via Wadi Abu Zeituna). 

Around Jebel Banat
  • Jebel Banat: red granite mountain on the edge of the high mountains.
  • Wadi Freah: a big open area, the first location along the route from the settlement of Abu Seila.
  • Wadi Saray: the shortest route from Wadi Freah to Jebel Banat.
  • Wadi Abu Zeituna: a long wadi connecting the settlement of Abu Zeituna to Jebel Banat.
  • Wadi Gharba: the wadi along the route to Jebel Banat from Sheikh Awad.
  • Wadi Nogra: a short wadi starting at the base of Jebel Banat and ending in a spectacular seasonal waterfall called Sida Nogra, connecting to Wadi Gharba.

Mostly noted for water sports and the wide selection of high-end hotels, the city now stretches over 20 kilometres from the port in the south to the Nabq Protectorate fence in the north. For many visitors off-road adventure means quad-biking on the outskirts of the city, but there are several good operators in town who run proper safaris.

Mount Sinai (Jebel Musa)

Mt. Sinai is part of a range, forming a single granite massif with Jebel Safsafa and other peaks. Ras Safsafa rises dramatically above the broad plain of Wadi al-Raha, traditionally believed to be the gathering place of the Israelites, while the peak of Jabal Musa crowns the opposite end of the range above Saint Catherine’s Monastery. Tucked between the rugged cliffs and ridges near the summit are secluded basins that once served as retreats for monks and hermits. These hidden pockets preserve chapels, hermit cells, gardens, wells, and ancient reservoirs, and from various viewpoints you can see areas not visible from the peak.
