Sinai Photo Archive

The Photo Archive has several aims and functions. First, it aims to show the beauty and diversity of this land and glimpses of life in the Sinai, and for this reason the best photos are being organised into different albums – to see them visit the home page of the archive. It is also a supplement to the ‘Main Attractions’ part of the website and the ‘Index of Locations’ of the guidebook. Photos in the archive have been tagged according to geographical locations (geotags), so people can view all pictures related to a certain place. On the Photo Archive pages you see other related tags (keywords) which you can combine with the geotags to narrow the search. Further tags will be added so you can find pictures corresponding to different topics. Photos are displayed according to user rating by default, hoping the best pics will float to the top, but you have many other filtering and search options to get the results you want. You can also list images according to date or see them in calendar mode, so play around with the archive to get the hang of it.

Main Sinai attractions


Whole Sinai is desert, and one of the driest in the world at that, but you could divide it to ‘mountains’ and ‘desert’. The High Mountain Region, technically called a ‘high altitude desert ecosystem’, is wetter than and very different from the rest of the peninsula. Strictly speaking it is around the town of St Katherine in the centre, but in a broader sense the whole south-western tip of the peninsula is considered to be part of the high mountains. Desert landscapes, as most people imagine desert, are found in the sandy belt that stretches across the peninsula virtually from coast to coast, north of the mountainous tip and south of the Tih and the Guna Plateaus.

  • St. Katherine and Mt. Sinai: the two most famous tourist sites in the Sinai are found in the town of Saint Katherine, but there are other lesser known attractions in and around town.
  • The high mountains: the roof of Sinai, with many peaks above 2000 metres, containing a maze of wadis with lush Bedouin orchards.
  • The desert: as stunning as any in the world, the sandy desert areas of Sinai are very diverse, with big open sandy plains, long plateaus, sandstone hills and rock formations, canyons and oases.
  • The coast: wash off the dust of a long trek or desert safari in one of the coastal national parks.

This is a screenshot of what the Sinai Photo Archive used to look like. It was part of the Sinai Trekking and Safari website and, like the rest of the site, was available in five languages. As you can see, 27,396 photos were available, all tagged by location and other important keywords. For example, if you searched the tags for “Mt. Sinai + camel + snow”, you would find all the photos taken there after a snowfall that also included a camel. Perhaps more importantly, the archive was created as a supplement to the guidebook. Every location mentioned in the book, however small or little known, was tagged, so readers could get a visual impression of each place.  Unfortunately, it is all gone. The website crashed in 2016, and all this work was lost. I still have the photos on my hard drives, but I will never attempt to rebuild the archive to the same extent. It was a huge amount of work, uploading more than 27,000 photos to the server and then tagging them. I simply do not have the wil...
