Wadi Raha (Encampment)

 


Wadi Raha is a wide plain at the foot of the Jebel Musa-Ras Safsafa range, believed by many to be the Encampment of the Israelites. It has a very striking view of Ras Safsafa, although the peak of Mt. Sinai is not visible from this angle. You can also see the Nabi Harun area and the Monastery of St. Katherine, as well as Jethro's Hill and the town. Today, there is a small settlement on the plain, and nearer to the town hotels and a new Visitors Centre in the making.

Mostly noted for water sports and the wide selection of high-end hotels, the city now stretches over 20 kilometres from the port in the south to the Nabq Protectorate fence in the north. For many visitors off-road adventure means quad-biking on the outskirts of the city, but there are several good operators in town who run proper safaris.

Mount Sinai (Jebel Musa)

Mt. Sinai is part of a range, forming a single granite massif with Jebel Safsafa and other peaks. Ras Safsafa rises dramatically above the broad plain of Wadi al-Raha, traditionally believed to be the gathering place of the Israelites, while the peak of Jabal Musa crowns the opposite end of the range above Saint Catherine’s Monastery. Tucked between the rugged cliffs and ridges near the summit are secluded basins that once served as retreats for monks and hermits. These hidden pockets preserve chapels, hermit cells, gardens, wells, and ancient reservoirs, and from various viewpoints you can see areas not visible from the peak.
